Erin & Tyler’s forest engagement session

Every now and then I drive by a particular spot, and I think to myself, “What a perfect place for a photoshoot.” I add it to the mental catalog, and nine times out of ten, I completely forget about it and move on. However, there is one tiny little forest just off 75 in McKinney that I have been eying for years, just waiting for the right couple to take there, and with Erin and Tyler, I finally got my chance. Erin and Tyler are quite possibly the most laid-back bride and groom in the history of weddings. At their engagement session – which happened about a week before we left for Ireland for their wedding – Erin sprang the news on me that she had not yet purchased a wedding dress, and didn’t really even have any plans where to start. This is the kind of thing that most brides have nightmares about (I had that particular nightmare no less than ten times myself), but Erin just smiled, shrugged her shoulders, and said “It’ll work out.” With that kind of positive attitude, I knew that she and Tyler would be the perfect opportunity for me to suggest that we just pull off the highway and shoot their engagement session in a random patch of woods. True to form, Erin and Tyler jumped right in, and it turned out to be one of my favorite engagement sessions this year. I can’t wait to show you their incredible Irish wedding, but for now, here are a few of my favorites from their engagement session:

Shannon & Will’s Highland Park Engagements

Oh boy, has it been difficult to keep this one under wraps! I’ve been holding onto this engagement session for quite some time, and now that it has made its debut on Style Me Pretty, I’m thrilled to be able to publish it here on my blog! This was hands down one of my favorite engagement sessions to shoot, not only because Shannon and Will are two fun, outgoing, beautiful people (which makes them extremely easy to photograph) but also because they really injected some of themselves into their session. Shannon made it clear to me that getting a nice, posed, formal newspaper shot was a secondary concern to her – she was far more interested in capturing their personalities and the spirit of their relationship with each other. To help make that happen, we took some of their favorite things – books they love to read together, their beloved beach cruisers, a picnic blanket and a bottle of wine – and we headed to a park right beside their home that they often spent time at. I basically told them to just goof off, love on each other, and be themselves, and they were happy to oblige. Here are some of my favorites from their session:

Jessica and Rawley’s Rustic Ranch Engagement Session

Despite being born and raised in the “big city” of Dallas, I’ll always be a bit of a country girl at heart. Lately I’ve been shooting a lot in some more rural areas, and I have fallen in love with it. I love the huge, rolling fields and patches of trees and winding dirt roads and all of the beautiful animals and livestock you find out there. Photography has given me so much more of an appreciation for nature, and any chance I can get to go out and shoot beautiful people in beautiful natural places, I really enjoy. Photographing Jessica and Rawley’s engagement session at Jessica’s family ranch in Aubrey, TX and historic downtown Pilot Point was one of those opportunities. Jessica and Charlie’s College Station Engagements

It has been crazy long since I posted an engagement session – May, to be specific – so I thought it was definitely time to add some new ones to the blog! Jessica and Charlie asked me to go to the home of our alma mater, Texas A&M, for their engagement session, and I happily agreed. Pammie & Kyle’s Turtle Creek engagement session

Pammie is pretty much your typical Southern belle bride – gorgeous, super sweet, very hospitable, with an adorable Southern accent – so I can’t tell you how bummed I am that I won’t be shooting their wedding, but I am glad that I got the chance to do an engagement portrait session for them at Lee Park and Arlington Hall in downtown Dallas. Jamie and Chase’s Frisco engagement session

When I asked Jamie and Chase where they wanted to do their engagement session, their only request was that we include some railroad tracks. Considering that I live in one of the biggest train towns in the DFW area, that should have been an easy find, but surprisingly enough it’s not quite so easy to find the perfect tracks. We ended up wandering all around town, stopping at a great park and discovering the perfect train track spot in the middle of nowhere. The light was about as perfect as perfect gets, and these two are naturals in front of the camera. Here are some of my faves from their session:

Jamie & Garrett’s Discovery Green Engagement Photos

Jamie and Garrett are now officially engaged, so I guess that means it’s about time to show off their engagement photo session! I’d never shot Discovery Green in downtown Houston before, but now I see why everyone raves about it – it’s absolutely gorgeous, and a great place to spend a warm, sunny day. Alma & Kelly at River Legacy Park

It’s always odd to shoot the engagement session of someone you’ve never met… I can’t lie, there are a lot of questions that go through my mind as I drive to the shoot. Will they be supermodel gorgeous, or hideously deformed? Will they be outgoing and zany, or will they be shy and introverted? Will they be comfortable in front of the camera, or awkward and stiff? Will he be two feet taller than her, or the other way around? Although I can work with any couple, it’s still comforting to know what you’re getting yourself into a little earlier than, say, five seconds before you start shooting! Luckily, Kelly and Alma were quite the pleasant surprise. They’re so comfortable with each other, comfortable in front of the camera, fun to be around, totally photogenic, and just good people in general. Here are some of my favorites from their session at the fantastic (and HUGE) River Legacy Park in Arlington:

Jamie & Garrett’s Houston engagement session

Sometimes being a little delayed on my blog postings is a blessing in disguise.. In this case, I’m currently shooting 3-4 sessions a week, and unfortunately, because of the cold weather most of them have a kind of dark, bare, wintery feel to them. It was such a breath of fresh air to relive Jamie and Garrett’s engagement session, which is about as sunny and happy and summery as it gets. I absolutely love the feel of this session, which was held at Discovery Green park in the midst of downtown Houston. You just can’t look at all these bright colors and the big bold balloons and their adorable dog and not smile! I also love that Jamie has quite possibly the most beautiful skin I’ve ever seen – flawless, people! – and that they were both brave enough to jump in the splash park at the end of the session! Lisa and Grant’s Wal-Mart Engagement Session

It’s pretty much common sense for any business person to never do business with their friends and family.. Well, apparently I didn’t get that memo because my favorite weddings to shoot are the ones I do for people I have known for years. It seems like the photos come out so much better when you know so many members of the wedding party and everyone feels comfortable having you around. I already know Lisa and Grant’s wedding is going to be exactly like that – it will practically be a T-Camp reunion! T-Camp was an organization at our alma mater, Texas A&M, that helped incoming transfer students learn about the traditions and culture in Aggieland. One year not too long ago, Lisa and I were counselors in Camp Stratta, and Grant was one of our venerable co-chairs. When you spend so much time together, you’re bound to have a few love connections, and sure enough, Lisa and Grant got hooked on each other! I have so many great memories with these guys, not the least of which was the nickname that plagued me for months – Steakballs – so I’m super excited to be a part of their wedding day!!

I’d been wanting to do a session in Wal-Mart, but I wasn’t sure that I could get a couple to agree to it.. Then along came Grant and Lisa, who are totally chill and fun and always up for anything, so they agreed to be my guinea pigs! I also can’t go in a Wal-Mart without hearing Lisa’s voice in my head yelling “Iiiiiii knoooooow!!” in a thick Southern drawl (part of an old Camp Stratta skit), so it’s somewhat fitting. Lisa and Grant, thanks so much for volunteering to try some new and crazy things out with me, and for being great friends. Can’t wait for the wedding!
