One of my all time favorite things to do is to travel. Seeing a new landscape and culture that I’ve never experienced before is one of the most thrilling things about life, and for me personally, it’s ten times better when I get to take a camera and a client along for the ride. I’ve been lucky enough to visit so many different states and countries as a photographer, including Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, Paris, Venice, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Nebraska, Arkansas, and so many others. In a few weeks my husband Jason and I will be jet-setting off to Europe for a couple of weeks immersing ourselves in new cultures and testing what we’ve learned in our year’s worth of French lessons, so to prepare myself for the trip, I decided to blog some of my recent destination work!

This week I’m starting off closer to home with a detail-rich wedding down in Marfa, Texas. Although it is in my home state, Marfa is much further away than many out of state weddings I’ve shot, and the culture is so drastically different that it feels like entering a new country. If you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting Marfa, the best way I can explain it is that it’s a hipster’s paradise. The town revolves around art, music, and culture and very much embraces its different-ness.  Everywhere you turn there’s a new art gallery or installation, musical performance, food truck, unique and innovative boutique, farmer’s market (quite an interesting variety considering it’s surrounded by desert and canyon), or trendy restaurant, as well as being the home of the famous Marfa Lights. You’d never expect to find an artistic haven nestled in such an isolated area, but if you’re willing to make the trek, it’s well worth it (especially for the Grilled Cheese Emporium).

Considering the Marfa culture, it’s no surprise that musician and artists Sissy & David decided it was the perfect place to say “I Do.” I had the privilege of photographing Sissy’s sister Rebecca’s wedding a few years prior, and I had been dying to check Marfa out for myself for years, so I was super excited to travel down the the Big Bend region with their family and friends and photograph their wedding at the Thunderbird Hotel and Capri Lounge. Sissy and David really put their style and vision to work in every aspect of their wedding, and the details were some of the most personalized and unique I’ve ever seen.  Here are a few of my favorites from their day:

Although I’m a city girl, there’s something magical about the country that speaks to me.   Wild overgrown forests, thick patches of bushy green clover, horses galloping across fields under a sunny blue sky – it’s a wonderful respite from the buzz of the city, so I cherish every chance I get to visit it.  I first got the chance to experience Jessica’s corner of the country when I shot her and Rawley’s engagement session at her family’s horse ranch in Pilot Point, and it was a joy to return there to photograph her bridal session.  Here are some of my favorites from her day:

You know that you’ve been neglecting your blog when a potential client emails to ask if you’re still doing boudoir because you haven’t posted a new session in TWO YEARS!!

Yes, I am still shooting boudoir, and in fact I have been shooting quite a lot of them lately, and thanks to a more relaxed winter wedding schedule, I also finally found the time to update my terribly abandoned boudoir site, Racy Steeves.  I’ve also got a few more posts lined up there for the future, so make sure to add it to your blog reader! Unfortunately it’s too late for Valentine’s Day session, but if you’ve got a birthday or wedding anniversary coming up, or you just want to celebrate your awesome and beautiful self, email me now and schedule a boudoir session of your own.

Historic downtown McKinney is one of my favorite places in all of Texas. The quiet streets are lined with huge, gorgeous turn of the century homes and sweet families waving hello to each other and sipping lemonade on their wraparound porches. It feels like you’ve walked right out of Better Homes and Gardens. When I had the chance to photograph Rebecca’s wedding a few years back in the backyard of one of the most beautiful homes on one of the most beautiful streets (so historic it even has a Texas landmark plaque on the front door), I was thrilled to get an intimate introduction into this magical place, and I’ve been dying to go back ever since. Thankfully, Rebecca’s sister Hannah called me when she got engaged, and I jumped at the chance to return to her family’s lovely home for her bridal portraits. I’m madly in love with Hannah’s fashion sense, and she didn’t disappoint with her gorgeous pleated wedding gown adorned with rhinestones and bows and a bubble hem, and of course her amazing red heels! Here are some of my favorites from her session:

It did not take much convincing from Rachel and Justin to get me to leave the triple-digit scorching Texas summer heat and join them at their family’s vacation home in Crested Butte, Colorado.  It was the first week in August, and while my friends and family in Dallas were sitting lazily by their air conditioning units and daydreaming of Antarctica, Rachel and Justin and I were walking down Crested Butte’s main street, going in and out of antique stores and coffee shops and restaurants, enjoying the sun and blue sky and, most importantly, the 60 degree weather.  We ate delicious food, took midday naps, read books on cool sunny patios, and somewhere in there we found time to shoot Rachel and Justin’s engagement session.  I am so looking forward to their March wedding which is sure to be fabulous, especially with the amazing Paige Chenault as their wedding coordinator!  Here are some of my favorites:

Fellow photographers are always some of my favorite clients to work with. They understand the importance of trusting the photographer they hired and their vision and artistic style, but they also bring their own experience and creativity to their shoot. Lately I’ve been working with other wedding photographers a lot, which is both humbling and exciting. Once of my favorites has been Caroline Joy, an incredibly talented photographer formerly of Dallas, now located in Austin Texas. I have always adored her work, so I was literally jumping up and down with joy when she first inquired with me!  When I first met her, I thought to myself, this is the closest anyone can possibly get to a real life Disney princess.  She is petite, beautiful, has flawless skin and perfect hair, is always happy and laughing, always supporting everyone around her, and generally just a wonderful person inside and out.

Unfortunately, the stars did not align for me to photograph their wedding, but we did the next best thing and headed to Keller City Hall Park to do an engagement and Day After session. Considering Caroline’s gorgeous photos, I wasn’t the least bit surprised that discover that she and Aaron have impeccable style. I especially loved her bright red lipstick and the vintage bridal hairpiece she wore with her wedding gown, as well as their brand new adopted whippet Steve Z (who is already so in love with them, he whined whenever they weren’t within arm’s reach), and most of all their amazing creme Stella scooter that they bought for their wedding day. In fact, I was so obsessed with it that I immediately put it as the #1 item on my Christmas list! Maybe Santa will be kind to me this year, so I can look as cool as Caroline and Aaron! Here are some of my favorites from their day.
